Author - Tim Weber, GoWebLive.com

To gain a competitive edge, businesses must strive for an impactful online presence’. This is a statement that many business owners know but when it comes to getting their website designed, 6/10 end up with a site that though looks unique but fails to communicate their business message to the audience and ultimately fails to achieve corporate goals.

In the online world your website speaks for your business. It is like a giant ad that markets and promotes your business products and services to your potential customers. Therefore it should mirror your brand identity flawlessly and be perfectly aligned with your business values and goals.

Furthermore, as purchases and sales are made by customers through your business site, it is definitely a money maker. Therefore the site should be designed with the business goals in mind.

The Million Dollar Question

This brings us to the million dollar question ‘how to set goals for a website?’ If you are also wondering how you can get a website that helps you achieve your business goals then don’t you worry, this article will reveal to you some important tips on how to set goals for your e-commerce site.

Work Smart

When it comes to developing your business site on the web, it is important to have a clear idea of what you want in the end. This calls for the SMART strategy. This means:
1. Be Specific and clear
2. Set Measurable and Achievable Goals
3. Are the Goals Realistic?
4. Set a Time Period To Achieve Your Website Goals

Be Specific

To set your site goals you need be specific and clear. Now this does not mean you include long-term goals. To understand this statement in a better way let’s say you are setting your website goal and you write a goal that says ‘we will increase our business web traffic greatly’. The problem with this goal is that it is too vague and unclear. To set specific goals, you can redefine this goal by making it clear and short-term. You can say ‘We will generate 15% more web traffic every month this year.’

Measurable and Achievable

Once you specify your site goals, now you need to make sure that these are measurable and attainable. Keeping the same example in consideration, if you are trying to measure the increase in web traffic and whether or not were you able to achieve the stated goal, you can use various inbound marketing monitoring system software that track traffic and bounce rates. This will help you figure if your website is achieving the goals it developed to achieve or not.

Are the Goals Realistic?

Make sure the goals are not too demanding. If they are far-fetched, you will find it quite difficult to accomplish and if this happens, you might decide to get the site redesigned which may not be required had you set short-term goals.

Specify a Time Period

You will not achieve your goals overnight so if you assume that your new site design which conveys your brand message strongly would attract heavy web traffic in a couple of days, then that’d be wrong. However, this does not mean you need specify the time period to achieve your website goals in 5 years time. Here what you need to do is define a time period that is idealistic to acquire short-term goals. 6 months to 1 year is a good span.

These steps can help you set and achieve short-term website goals that can lead to long-term business success!
